Weight Loss and Hair Loss

I’ve lost some weight during the past 4 months and I have been losing a lot of hair lately, not sure why. Are weight loss and hair loss connected in any way?

Excessive or sudden weight loss and hair loss can be related.
Like other stressors, extreme weight loss can trigger the body’s defense mechanisms and cause hair loss.

When this happens, hair strands enter the resting phase (Telogen effluvium) of the hair prematurely. This means hair strands will fall off before their time.

Another way in which hair loss can occur as a result of weight loss is if you are on a diet that is missing some or most of the vitamins and minerals required for healthy hair growth.

Extreme diets can cause hair loss. Basically, if your body is not getting enough vitamins and minerals, then it will lose hair. Same is true for the case where you are not eating enough – This puts your body in stress, leading him to focus on survival and forget cosmetic, minor things like hair follicles and their nourishment.

A balanced diet is key for treatment and prevention of hair loss, so you should structure a daily menu with that in mind.
