If you want to be accurate, the answer to “can dundruff cause hair loss” is no. But dandruff and hair loss are related.

Dandruff can be caused by a fungus that will also cause hair loss.
Many times a person who has dandruff also has a very itchy scalp. So another way in which dandruff can cause hair loss is by causing the person to itch and tear his or her hair out.

Dandruff is often caused by a fungus called Pityrosporum ovale (or P ovale in short) that is being over active. Everyone have this fungus, but in people who have dandruff this fungus leads to over-shedding of hair cells (commonly referred to as ‘flaking’).

So dandruff by itself does not cause hair loss. But often when you have dandruff, P ovale is causing a mild inflammation on your scalp which makes your scalp itchy and THAT can lead to hair loss.
